Math Games

Here are some web links to very helpful and fun math games

Math Game for Decimal Values DECIMALS IN SPACE!

Games are a very helpful way to get kids more interested in learning math skills and these games just may to the trick for many kids.

Square Roots Using a Factor Tree

The square root of 18 is not a perfect square but there is a simplified way of writing this.First you need to do a prime factorization of the number 18 which looks like the image to the left. Once you have the prime factors of 2, 3 and 3 you put two times three times three in the square root.

Any pair of numbers makes that number appear on the outside of the square root making it look like this.

Which is the simplified way of writing the square root of 18.

Writing in Scientific Notation

There are many times in which writing a large number over and over can be very tedious. Scientist got sick of writing 93,955,807 miles every time that wanted to say the distance between the Earth and Sun. So scientific notation was created. It also works for very small numbers as well.

Here is a short video in which it shows the process of putting numbers into scientific notation.

Multiplying Numbers With Decimals

Multiplying numbers that contain decimals is not much different than multiplying numbers that do not have decimals. Here is a short but sweet video that shows you how to do this.

P.S. Don't mind the enthusiasm of the woman in the video.

Dividing Numbers With Decimals

This process is far easier than it seems. I am going to show you a simple two step process on how this is done.

Now the numbers you have been given to divide is 2 divided by .25

Step 1

It is difficult do do the division looking at the problem the way it is so we need to put this problem into terms that we are more familiar with. To do this we need to move the decimal around a bit. If you move the decimal two places to the right .25 will become 25 and 2 will become 200.

Step 2

Do this division now. So 200 divided by 25 is 8, making your answer to the problem being 8.

Here is a Video on some problem that might be a little bit harder than 2 divided by .25

Adding and Subtracting Numbers With Decimals

Adding and subtracting numbers that contain decimals is just as easy as doing any other addition or subtraction problem. But the only thing different is to make sure that you line up the decimal. Here is an example for both addition and subtraction.

1.32 2.25
+1.15 - 1.22
-------- ----------
2.47 1.03
